ABOUT ME
Hello! My name is Steve Witmer. I grew up in Tennessee and moved to Minnesota in 1983 to go to college where I met my wife Becky. We moved to Fairmont in 1991 and raised our two girls here. We now have 5 grandchildren who we enjoy spending time with. I also enjoy playing pickleball, playing guitar, reading, and teaching as opportunities arise.
THERAPEUTIC PHILOSOPHY
I utilize an eclectic counseling approach that focuses on hearing one’s story, identifying core beliefs, finding principles of truth that apply to one’s personal situation, and applying positive coping strategies with support and structure toward achieving a positive outcome and remedy. I have training in CBT, DBT, EMDR, substance abuse, and Christian counseling.
EDUCATION
Clinical education includes: Masters degree in Counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Completed 2yrs coursework in Alcohol and Drug Counseling.
Additional non-clinical education includes: Doctorate degree in Religion and Society Studies from Oxford (Omega) Graduate School in Dayton, TN; Bachelor of Art degree in Christian Education and Youth Ministry from the University of Northwestern, St Paul, MN.
WORK EXPERIENCE
I have a wide variety of work experience with adults and children, including working as a youth pastor, an associate pastor of adults, and a senior pastor. I have also worked in a hospital as a chaplain, was an adjunct professor at both Presentation College and Crown College, and have been counseling now for the last 10 years in a variety of therapeutic settings that include helping people of all ages in both inpatient and outpatient treatment modalities.
